Despite entering their maiden European campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding win that all but secures them a place in the Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal straight entry to the knockout stages, especially after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Moment
This match offered a chance for several Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second game in match.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their league season were outmatched against a largely second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, fizzing a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for improvement in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
