Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest particular calls made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
